Why we recommend Trip.com’s eSIM

A mainland China travel eSIM to compare first — not a promise that every listing is identical.

At a glance

Three reasons: the plans are cheap to start, mainland apps stay snappy on local 5G, and you can buy, install and turn it on after you land.

Pay for the days you need

Trip.com’s China eSIM listings include day-pass and data-pack options, so a short stay does not force you to buy a 30-day unlimited plan. Prices change often and vary by listing; the amount that matters is the one on the listing when you pay. Check the amount due now, the daily or total allowance, and whether unused days are refundable.

Mainland apps stay quick

The plans we point to use China Unicom or China Mobile 5G on the ground, so WeChat, Alipay, Amap and Didi talk to nearby servers instead of looping through a far-away VPN. Pick a listing labelled mainland China 5G; an “Asia regional” pack with a distant exit can still slow those same apps. An eSIM is data only — it does not give you a Chinese phone number.

Buy, install and use it after you land

Trip.com’s China eSIM is sold for use in mainland China: you can buy it in the Trip.com app, install it from the order or a QR code, then turn the line on and enable data roaming after you land. Save the QR code offline anyway, and read whether validity starts at installation or at first connection. Hotel Wi-Fi is still a separate path — the eSIM only helps while the phone is on mobile data.

Check these before you pay

The phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. On the listing, check mainland China coverage, 5G, hotspot rules and when validity starts. The eSIM page links to Trip.com and a second store; those are affiliate links, so RoamChina may earn a small commission, and the ranking follows your trip, not the fee.
