RoamChina (roamchina.app and the iOS app) is a guide to staying online in China. We do not run a network for you, create accounts, or upload diagnosis results to our servers.
What we do not do
- We do not collect names, phone numbers, or emails to build a profile — unless you write to us.
- We do not store server IPs, SSH keys, or passwords.
- We never handle your internet traffic and run no VPN servers.
- We do not run cross-app advertising tracking, and we do not sell personal data.
What happens on the website
A language preference may be stored in a cookie and local storage (chinanet_locale) on your browser so the same language comes back next time. Reachability checks and the plan quiz run locally in your browser. Probes send requests to public sites (for example WeChat or Google endpoints) to see whether this network can open them. Third-party probe and IP lookup services receive the requests and network exit IP under their own privacy policies. IP location does not establish your physical location. We cannot see your quiz answers.
What happens in the iOS app
Diagnosis, the quiz, and recent results stay on this iPhone (local storage). The app does not collect, store, or upload identity information or server credentials. If you allow location access, RoamChina uses coarse location to determine whether you are in mainland China and combines that context with network exit and latency. RoamChina does not send your location to our servers; reverse geocoding may be processed by iOS under Apple’s privacy policy.
During diagnosis, the phone sends requests to a short list of public sites and IP lookup services to measure latency, endpoint reachability, and network exit. Those third parties see the request and source IP under their own privacy policies. A successful probe does not verify sign-in, payments, calls, or every service feature.
Outbound links
Provider links such as Trip.com, Just My Socks, DMIT, and Vultr open independent third-party services and may include affiliate parameters. Their own privacy policies and transaction terms apply. If you complete a transaction there, we may earn a small commission. Those services do not unlock features in RoamChina or change ranking.
Children
This product is meant for adults traveling to China. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.
